One of the daunting challenges of my elementary education was the dreaded memorization of the Bible's Table of Contents. Most kids tucked away those sixty-six books pretty quickly. I also remember there was a similar cadence in all their voices as they recited them, and they all seemed to take their first breath at the same place (right before 1 Samuel, if I recall). But I simply had trouble with those pesky minor prophets, and especially Haggai. Fortunately, though, I have a resourceful mother. She came up with the useful mnemonic of waving every time I got to Zephaniah, which reminded me that the "Hey guy" book was coming up.
Well, she's at it again, but this time with the grandchildren. Olivia had a particularly difficult spelling test the other day, but she worked on it with Grandma. One particularly troublesome word was
"isolation" (strange, given the high difficulty level of some of the others, including the German ones), which Olivia wanted to spell with an "e" in place of "o." (It makes some sense now that I say the word to myself.) Grandma told Olivia to remind herself the following: "I SO wish to get this word right." The result: See number 21.
